BIS Extends Implementation Deadline for Household Adapter Standards Affecting Manufacturers' Compliance

The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) issued a circular on February 20, 2025, extending the implementation deadline for the revised IS 302 (Part 1): 2024 / IEC 60335-1:2020 for adapters used in household and similar electrical appliances to February 23, 2026, superseding the earlier circular from November 27, 2024. This change is particularly significant in light of the impact of climate change on agriculture.

To ensure compliance, manufacturers holding BIS certification under IS 302 (Part 1):2008 must transition to IS 302 (Part 1):2024 before the revised deadline. Here are some key additional details:

1. For Existing License Holders:

   • Must implement the revised standard by the implementation deadline.

   • Need to submit complete test reports from BIS-recognized laboratories for all lead models.

   • Must provide a declaration confirming implementation of the revised standard for other existing series models within the license scope.

     
     

2. For New Applicants:

   • New applications under IS 302 (Part 1):2008 will be accepted up to one month before the implementation deadline of the revised standard.

   • Existing applications will be processed according to current guidelines, but applicants must submit an undertaking to switch to the revised standard before the implementation deadline.

     
     

3. For Changes in License Scope:

   • Requests for changes in license scope under the old standard will only be allowed until the licensee switches to the revised standard or the implementation date, whichever comes first.

     
     

These guidelines are effective immediately. License holders who fail to complete all necessary actions by the deadline may risk license cancellation or removal of models from the license scope.
