On July 11, 2025, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) convened a pivotal meeting to formally launch the migration of products previously regulated under IS 13252 Part 1:2020 and IS 616:2017 to the updated IS/IEC 62368-2023 (Edition 4) international safety standard. The move affects 42 product categories and signals a new era for AV and ICT product compliance in India.
Key Meeting Highlights
- Three-year migration period for 42 product categories: All AV and ICT equipment currently regulated under CRO 2021 must transition to IS/IEC 62368-2023 within three years.
- New standalone category for AR/VR devices with a six-month transition: AR/VR products will be separated from previous classifications, with a six-month timeline.
- Clarification on existing BIS registered products (R-number): Special exemptions may be considered for products under maintenance contracts, end-of-life (EoL) replacements, or cases where exact model substitution is required.
- Implementation guidelines and lab accreditation: BIS will issue new series guidelines and expedite laboratory accreditation for IS/IEC 62368-2023. Stakeholders are encouraged to submit feedback.
- Consolidation of product categories: Items such as keyboards and wireless keyboards will be merged under the new regulatory framework.
- Industry invited to participate in guideline development: MeitY and BIS urge stakeholders to submit comments and suggestions by the end of July 2025, with the possibility of further meetings to finalize guidelines.
