[Qatar] CRA to End 3G Services by December 31, 2025; New Import Rules in Effect

Qatar to Phase Out 3G Services by End of 2025

The Communications Regulatory Authority (CRA) of Qatar has announced that all 3G/IMT-2000 mobile services will be discontinued by December 31, 2025. This aligns with Qatar’s Third National Development Strategy 2024–2030, aiming to enhance digital transformation and mobile connectivity.

New Import Requirements – Effective Immediately

All mobile device importers must now submit a signed and stamped declaration from the original manufacturer, explicitly:

  1. Confirming permanent deactivation of 2G and 3G functionalities.
  2. Affirming full support for Voice over LTE (VoLTE) technology.

Failure to meet these requirements could lead to delays or denial of type approval.

Policy Rationale

According to CRA, these measures are essential to:

  • Prevent outdated technologies from entering the market
  • Ensure only advanced, standards-compliant devices are available to consumers
  • Improve network performance, speed, and spectrum efficiency
