Thailand NBTC to Phase Out 2G/3G-Only Devices by June 30, 2025

The National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) of Thailand has announced that, starting June 30, 2025, type approval and importation of 2G/3G-only telecommunication devices will be discontinued. This initiative supports the country’s effort to modernize its telecom infrastructure and speed up the adoption of 4G and 5G technologies.
Key Policy Changes
- No new type approvals for devices supporting only 2G/3G networks.
- Ban on imports of 2G/3G-only devices.
- Invalidation of NBTC-issued certification marks and self-declarations for such devices.
Policy Objectives
According to NBTC, this transition is essential to:
- Improve network efficiency
- Free up spectrum resources
- Leverage the advantages of 4G/5G, including higher speeds, lower latency, greater capacity, and wider coverage
Devices supporting multiple network generations (e.g., 2G/3G/4G or 3G/4G/5G) are not affected by this regulation.
