Mexico Publishes NOM-004-ENER-2025 Energy Efficiency Standard
On April 28, 2025, Mexico officially published NOM-004-ENER-2025, a new mandatory energy efficiency standard for clean water motor pump assemblies and motor pumps. The regulation will be fully enforced 180 calendar days after the day following its publication, meaning compliance will be required around October 26, 2025.
Scope and Applicable Products
- Sets a maximum Pump Energy Index (PEI) limit of 1.0.
- Applies to products with power ratings from 0.149 kW (1/5 HP) to 1.492 kW (2 HP).
- Covers centrifugal and peripheral impeller types, including products imported, manufactured, or placed on the Mexican market.
Mandatory Energy Efficiency Label
- Minimum label size: 5.0 x 5.0 cm.
- Must display:
- Product’s PEI value
- Maximum permitted PEI (1.0)
- Disclaimer: actual energy consumption depends on installation and usage habits
Conformity Certification Modalities
- Modality 1: Periodic product testing (by model or family) → One-year certificate.
- Modality 2: Quality management system assessment on production line (by model or family) → Three-year certificate.
Transition from Previous Standard
- Products certified under NOM-004-ENER-2014 may continue to be imported until their certificates expire.
- Manufacturers may choose to obtain certification under NOM-004-ENER-2025 upon its effective date, even if the previous certificate is still valid.
