Mexico Telecom Shake-up: IFETEL to Be Replaced by CRT and ATDT
The Mexican government has announced that the long-standing Federal Telecommunications Institute (IFETEL) will be dissolved by the end of September and replaced by two new authorities:
- CRT (Telecommunications Regulatory Commission): A decentralized technical body that will oversee licensing, concessions, and consumer protections.
- ATDT (Agency for Digital Transformation and Telecommunications): A government agency responsible for telecom policy, digital infrastructure, and expanding public access.
Purpose of the Transition
This structural shift aims to modernize telecom governance, improve digital inclusion, and give the federal government a more direct role in shaping Mexico’s digital future. For businesses operating in the telecom sector, this transition will bring new regulatory frameworks, oversight mechanisms, and compliance requirements.
Impact on Businesses and Homologation Delays
We have been informed that all IFETEL operations will cease on the last day of September. In particular, the homologation department will stop accepting applications on September 26. Applications submitted on September 25 and 26 will be transferred to CRT for handling.
Additionally, the homologation department will remain closed for 5 days, while IFETEL as a whole will suspend services for 15 days. Since only a small number of current IFETEL staff members have agreed to transfer to CRT, significant delays in processing are expected.
